I'M A 99
The New Generation of Women Pilots
ABOUT US
The African Section Ninety Nines International Organisation of Women Pilots is an active chapter of its parent company, the Ninety-Nines International Organisation of Women Pilots, whose name reflects the number of charter members and celebrates its 1929 first president, Amelia Earhart. The oldest organisation of women pilots with some 7000 members from 44 countries worldwide.Â
Women have been flying since the early 1900s. Before 1970, however, most women in aviation were restricted to working in support roles. Today, work for women in aviation is diverse—astronauts, pilots, aircraft technicians, engineers, air traffic controllers, and more.
Still, in 2021 only 6% of pilots are women. Thanks to non-profit organisations like the Ninety Nines International Organisation of Women Pilots—who promote aviation through education, those numbers are beginning to change.Â
Our African Section 99s female pilot members encourage, empower, and educate women as well as youth who share an interest in aviation. They are role models for future generations – encouraging girls and youth to discover aviation through the grassroots STEM project, Girls Wings For Africa (GWFA).
