About

The African Section Ninety Nines International Organisation of Women Pilots is an active chapter of its parent company, the Ninety-Nines International Organisation of Women Pilots, whose name reflects the number of charter members and celebrates its 1929 first president, Amelia Earhart. The oldest organisation of women pilots with some 6000 members from 44 countries worldwide.

Women have been flying since the early 1900s. Before 1970, however, most women in aviation were restricted to working in support roles. Today, work for women in aviation is diverse—astronauts, pilots, aircraft technicians, engineers, air traffic controllers, and more.

Still, in 2021 only 6% of pilots are women. Thanks to non-profit organisations like the Ninety Nines International Organisation of Women Pilots—who promote aviation through education, those numbers are beginning to change.

Our African Section 99s female pilot members encourage, empower, and educate women as well as youth  who share an interest in aviation. They are role models for future generations – encouraging girls and youth to discover aviation through the grassroots STEM project, Girls Wings For Africa (GWFA).

Our organisation of volunteers provides year-round resources to encourage young women and girls to choose aviation as a career and support women who work in aviation. We offer educational programs, conferences, seminars, mentoring, and scholarships.

At the African Section 99s, we are a welcoming sisterhood of role models and friends, helping you achieve your aviation dreams and goals. It is a place to share ideas and knowledge and take our love of flying and use it for something bigger than ourselves.

Aviation is more than a career—it’s an innovation, education, and collaboration. Our women are heroes of the sky. We share history, ideas, and dreams of reaching greater heights. We celebrate a culture of safety, support, knowledge, and camaraderie while honouring our unique history and shared passion for flight.
