Women In Aviation & Aerospace Charter

The Women in Aviation and Aerospace Charter was launched at the Farnborough Airshow 2018, the Women in Aviation and Aerospace Charter was launched, with companies and organisations within the UK’s aviation and aerospace sectors making a commitment to work together to build a more balanced and fair industry for women. With over 100 signatories, the charter reflects the aspiration to see gender balance at all levels across the industry for both women and men in the sector. It has also been included within the Aerospace Sector Deal between industry and the government announced on 6th December 2018 and featured within the Aviation 2050 – the future of UK aviation green paper published by the government on 17th December 2018.

The African Section 99s is an overseas supporting signatory to the charter. The African Section 99s signed up to support the charter and to advocate gender equality in the aviation industry not just in UK, in Africa and globally. This is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SGD 4 Gender Equality. As females in the aviation industry, especially female pilots in Africa are very under represented. Signing to the charter hopefully raises awareness about the gender equality disparity, the strides that are being made to see inclusion of women at all levels, globally.

Women In Aviation and Aerospace Charter launched a Resource Hub on the WIAAC website. The Resource Hub, contains more than 100 free articles, tools and other resources, they can now offer current and future signatories a wealth of accessible content to refer to when developing an effective and long-lasting diversity and inclusion strategy. As the aviation and aerospace industry continues to persevere through the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, they hope that the Resource Hub inspires more companies and organisations to commit to rebuilding a fairer and more balanced industry for the future. 

IATA - Advancing Gender Balance 25x2025

The need to improve gender balance in aviation is not new. To address it, IATA launched 25by2025, a voluntary industry wide campaign that focuses on improving female representation in the industry. The campaign targets not only airlines but also aircraft manufacturers and airports. It is an initial step to making the aviation industry more gender balanced. 

UN SDG Goals 2030

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
